Why Over-Engineering Still Matters
The SEL Instruments Omni-Diver Mark II is the kind of watch that appeals to my appreciation for thoughtful engineering. The extra effort shows up in ways that are difficult to quantify, yet easy to recognize when you spend time with it.
Over the years, I’ve had numerous interactions with Andrew McLean, the driving force behind SEL Instruments. Through those experiences, I’ve developed a great deal of respect for his abilities as a machinist and engineer. His attention to detail and commitment to execution are evident throughout this watch.
The Omni-Diver feels like a product that benefited from countless decisions made in pursuit of refinement. The case construction, tolerances, finishing, and overall execution reflect a level of thought that extends well beyond the basic requirements of a dive watch.
One area where that engineering becomes immediately apparent is the wearing experience. The Omni-Diver is a substantial watch, yet it wears far more comfortably than its dimensions might suggest. The relatively short lug-to-lug measurement helps keep the watch head centered on the wrist, giving it a balanced feel throughout the day. The WaveLock bracelet plays an equally important role. Designed and engineered by Andrew, it articulates exceptionally well and conforms naturally to the wrist. The shape and design of the links allow the bracelet to wrap around the wrist in a way that feels secure and comfortable.

The WaveLock clasp deserves special mention as well. Its design reflects the same engineering-first approach found throughout the rest of the watch. The locking mechanism inspires an exceptional level of confidence when wearing the Omni-Diver, and after spending time with it, I have come to view it as one of the most secure bracelet systems available on any watch today. It is another example of Andrew looking beyond conventional solutions and developing something purpose-built for the task.
Together, the compact lug-to-lug measurement, the WaveLock bracelet, and the innovative clasp design create a wearing experience that belies the watch’s size and weight.
Many of my favorite products share a similar characteristic. Whether it’s a watch, a camera, or one of my cars, I enjoy objects that reveal additional layers of engineering the longer I live with them. The Omni-Diver Mark II delivers that experience. Every component feels purposeful, and every detail contributes to a sense of confidence in the finished product.

Most owners will never approach the watch’s limits, yet the engineering remains an important part of the ownership experience. The knowledge that so much care went into its design creates an appreciation that extends beyond specifications.
The Omni-Diver Mark II reflects the personality of the people who created it. Spending time with the watch reinforces the impression that precision, durability, and craftsmanship were priorities throughout the development process.
Those qualities continue to stand out every time I wear it.
